Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms

This course studies the political and social impacts of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms on Canadian politics. It does so by evaluating its overall effects on policy-making, courts, interest groups and citizens. It will include a consideration of these effects in the context of key Charter provisions and their interpretation, including fundamental freedoms (religion, expression), and equality rights (gender, sexual identity), and Indigenous rights. (Sem. 3, Cr. 3). Seminar. Prereq:24 political science or law and justice credits. Students cannot retain credit for both POLI 4725E and POLI 4727
